About Heather Cassils

Heather Casssils is a queer visual artist and personal trainer, originally from Montreal, Canada and now based in California. She thinks of her physical body as a sculptural mass, and has turned it into is one of her creative tools. She is a ex semi pro boxer, who has trained her body in a way which is not typically female. Becoming An Image (2013) is a new body of work consisting of a live performance, photographs, a sculpture and an audio piece. It was originally commissioned by the ONE Archive, the oldest active Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning (LGBTQ) organization in USA. The performance questions the bisexual and transgendered people who are often missing from historical records and are more or less invisible in the archives.

In 1997 Cassils received a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada and received an MFA in 2002 from Art and Integrated Media, from the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. She is one of the founding members of the performance group the Toxic Titties (2000-2010). She is an international artist who is widely exhibited. Her works has been shown at J. Paul Getty Museum’s Pacific Standard Time at LACE and the One National Gay and Lesbian Archives (2012); Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (2012); the ANTI-Contemporary Art Festival in Finland (2012); Kapelica Gallery in Slovenia (2011); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (2008); Ronald Feldman Fine Art in New York, 2013.
