June 7, 2011: 18.00 – Opening of the art exhibition “Family”
MÄRZ project space in Tallinn, Estonia.
The winners of the festival art prize will be announced at the opening of the exhibition.
‘Family’ will take place from June 6-12, 2011 within the framework of an LGBT solidarity and culture week in MÄRZ project space in Tallinn, European Capital of Culture 2011. The exhibition is organized by NGO Estonian Gay Youth. Its aim is to introduce issues related to sexual minorities through artistic self-expression.
The curators say: ‘The economic crisis of recent years has underlined the importance of family in a society. Family as a social unit has functioned as a buffer and has helped to live with inequality and go through the hard times. The more emotional basis of family contradicted the pragmatic approach of economy which resulted in discovering completely different ways of looking at the driving forces of a society. Suddenly, social solidarity became an issue and a question arose – what is such solidarity and who does it include?
Families of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi, trans) people are different from traditional families, hence the members of these families may be misunderstood, they may experience negative attitudes and also discrimination. However, the meaning of family has also changed within the straight community and thus needs more thorough analysis and reflection.’
