Nicola Tyson
was born in 1960 in London, England. She attended Chelsea School of Art, St. Martins School of Art and Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London and currently lives and works in upstate New York. Nicola is primarily known as a painter, however drawings are also central to her creative practice. The Goodby/Hello exhibition consists of three paintings and a set of recent drawings.
In the early 1990s lesbian artist Nicola Tyson ran Trial Balloon in a section of her New York studio loft, an all-woman, semi-commercial gallery which highlighted the work of lesbian artists. Some of her drawings from the 1990s are featured in Lesbian Art in America – A contemporary History by Harmony Hammond (2000).
Her work is included in major collections such as Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C; and Tate Modern, London. She is represented by Petzel Gallery in New York and Sadie Coles HQ in London.
